Substitute teachers and educational assistants are vitally important to keeping the wheel moving at every school. Their patience, flexibility and overall care are facets that we not only appreciate, but celebrate. Fairfield Community Schools has changed how we bring substitute workers into our corporation. Rather than using an outside firm to manage from afar, we decided to oversee substitute hires from within our own walls. The process to become a substitute is simple, and still offers the flexibility to choose what days you work and where while getting paid at the same time! It’s a great means of income for retirees, part-time employees, college students on their breaks, or just someone who is interested in teaching but doesn’t have the education degree. New Paris Elementary first graders got a jump on their holiday feasts with a special Thanksgiving meal Tuesday afternoon. Turkey, mashed potatoes, all the fixings, desserts, it was all there, and the kids did their share of making a lot of it disappear! Thank you to all of the parent volunteers for preparing the meal and serving it to our first graders!

Third graders at MEMS presented their Animal Adaption and biome projects this morning. They researched an animal, wrote a book on it, and participated in a STEM project where they had to build their animal and show the adaptation of their animal. Very well done all around!

Our robotics teams from Millersburg and Fairfield both qualified for the semi-state competition in December after a quality showing at the local competition held at Concord Intermediate School this past weekend. Sharing their Innovation Project and Core Values packages with judges, the Millersburg team, led by Tim Eichorst, and the Fairfield team, led by Becky Balon, constructed robots using Ev3 and Spike Prime LEGO kits. They then programmed these robots to complete tasks on the robot table for points. The semi-state round of competition will take place in mid-December in Fort Wayne. The past came alive Friday in Mrs. Steffen's fifth grade classroom at Benton Elementary! The students put on their wax museum, representing notable historical figures in world history. From Vasco da Gama to Jeanne Baret, the students represented them with factoids about their lives and dressed the part in costume.

Order in the court! Fairfield students in Ryan LeCount's US government class took a trip up to Elkhart County Superior Court this morning to take part in mock trials! Students were able to see how the court process works, hear real-time procedure in a court setting, and listen to instruction from Judge Kristine Osterday.

Fairfield kicked off the unofficial start to its wrestling season Thursday night with program-wide Blue and Gold blacklight matches. The regular season for the program technically started last week with our girls competing at the East Noble Invite, and the JV will kick off tomorrow at West Noble. The varsity boys will compete Tuesday at Northridge in its first action of the season.

Happy National Substitute Teacher Appreciation Day! There is no way the wheels keep moving at our schools without substitute teachers. From classroom help for a day, to maternity leaves, to cafeteria subs and everything in between. It all matters to have people at the ready to fill in and lead when the need arises. Veterinary Careers class at Fairfield High School is having its first surgery day for the 2023-24 school year. Along with the help of Dr. Hilary Christner, owner of LaGrange Animal Clinic, 21 Fairfield CTE and seven visiting NorthWood students will assist in spaying and neutering 10 cats. Students assist with surgical prep, restraint, monitoring and recovery of the patients with the assistance of Jill Anderson, RVT (Instructor) and NorthWood instructor Brandi Henderson. *This service is not open to community members*

Fairfield is set to reveal its fall play: The Odd Couple. There will be two performances, Friday, Nov. 17, and Saturday, Nov. 18, in the Fairfield auditorium. Both shows are set for 7 p.m. The storyline, built around writing pals Felix Ungar and Oscar Madison, details how two polar opposites can find common ground among the life around them. The Friends of Benton plaques have been taken down at Benton Elementary School, but were saved. This weekend we pause and pay respects to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, as well as those who are still in uniform serving our country. Fairfield Jr/Sr High School held its Veteran's Day program this morning, a moving and powerful tribute to both locals and countrymen. Among the ceremony was a touching tribute of the Missing Man Table, special reads from Fairfield High School students and staff, and a host of FHS graduates who joined the ceremony as special guests. Kudos to Ryan LeCount and Tracy Stanger for their work to put together a quality tribute.

The annual Blue & Gold Gala was center stage Saturday night in New Paris, and once again brought together the Fairfield community in support of its athletic programs. Keynote speaker Brodie Garber spoke, naturally, about the girls basketball run to a state championship, the first-ever team title for a Fairfield team, as well as how the basketball run galvanized a community support that couldn't be overlooked. The Gala once again had several big ticket items up for grabs, including a unique pair of Nike shoes created from actual game-used Fairfield memorabilia.

Fairfield High School saw several of its athletes excel at the regional and state level this year. A host of the state coaches and sport organizations recognized Fairfield athletes for their excellence on the field of play as well as in the classroom.
