Fairfield High School senior Mariah Beachey quietly went about her business as a football manager. Other than offering some direction to some of the younger managers, Beachey often had a look of focus on her face while she served on the sidelines this fall.
While quiet in disposition as a manager, Beachey’s actions spoke volumes in being chosen as one of five to win the Guy David Gundlach Memorial Scholarship. The Gundlach scholarships are distributed through the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, given to students in Elkhart County who didn’t have a parent finish a four-year baccalaureate degree.
Beachey is joined by Madison Lehman of Bethany Christian, Jacob Whitlow of Elkhart High School, Jose Cervantes, Jr., of Jimtown High School, and Aislynn Hernandez of Northridge High School. Winners of the scholarships receive a series of four $5,000 scholarships for college, a total of $20,000.
