Girls golf made the first jump into the state tournament season with play in Friday’s Northridge Sectional at Meadow Valley.
Two of the Lady Falcons’ five will advance to the regional as Bella Blosser and Mallory McGowen qualified as individuals. Blosser shot a 91 and McGowen a 96 to make the jump to this week’s East Noble Regional at Noble Hawk, set for Friday morning.
Fairfield shot a 427 as a team to finish fifth overall, ending the team season. Adie Holsopple shot 119, Greta Hochstetler a 121 and Whitney Wogoman a 128 to conclude their seasons.
Wrapping up the week, Fairfield shot a 215 to beat Mishawaka Marian’s 228 at Meadow Valley. McGowen led the way with a 46 and Blosser had a 48. Blosser dropped her score to 41 and McGowen added another 46 as Fairfield squeaked by Churubusco, 200-205, at Eel River. Hochstetler put together one of her best rounds of the season with a 50.
Boys tennis continued to run undefeated in the Northeast Corner Conference, starting with a 3-2 win Monday against Angola. Both doubles teams came through for the Falcons, and Garrett Stoltzfus won another match by love-love score. A night later at West Noble, the Falcons allowed just four points in singles play and five points in doubles play to sweep the Chargers, 5-0.
Fairfield closed out the work week with a 5-0 win at Westview Thursday, locking up the NECC regular season title. Stoltzfus, Drew Beachy and Conner LeCount all won in singles play, Cameron Cripe and Grady Garber won in straights in doubles play, and Brant Garber and Andrew Mathews rallied from a set down to win in three, needing a 7-1 tiebreaker to win at one dubs.
JV play was dominated by the Falcons, winning 12 of 15 matches against the Warriors.
Cross country made history Tuesday night, running a varsity meet on campus for the first time in nearly half a decade. Hosting Bethany Christian, Jimtown and Elkhart Christian, Fairfield swept on both sides of the scoreboard, establishing new time standards for seasons to come.
The girls opened the evening, and Natalee Lambright now holds the course record with a 21:06 after crossing the line first. Lyla Dennis (21:53), Lorelei Shively (23:12), Claira Foust 23:25) and Shelby Miller (24:36) were all scorers for the Lady Falcons, which beat a strong ECA side 23-32. Jimtown and Bethany did not field full girls teams.
The boys went next, with Evan Correll holding the standard with a top time of 18:24, leading the top pack of Falcons. Caden Harris was second at 18:26, followed by Carson Correll (18:36) and Kaden Decker (18:52) making up the top four of the race. Levi Sydor (19:23) was the fifth score for Fairfield, which beat ECA, 17-42, and Jimtown, 15-49. Bethany did not field a full team.
Fairfield got to tour the regional round track at New Prairie on Saturday, running at the massive New Prairie Invitational. Fairfield’s boys finished seventh in Class AA and the girls were eighth.
Evan Correll had a great race, placing third overall at 16:45, followed by Carson Correll (38, 18:14) and Harris (40, 18:18). Lambright had the top time for the Lady Falcons at 21:08, good for 13th overall, followed by Dennis (20, 21:39) and Shively (35, 22:18).
In the middle school races at the West Noble Invite on Saturday, the boys team finished 12th and the girls team 17th overall. Top times for Fairfield were 11:04 from Bently Smythe in the boys race, taking 19th overall; and 12:08 from Layna Stoltzfus in the girls race, placing 14th overall.
Volleyball traveled up US 33 to visit Goshen Tuesday, and came home with a 3-1 loss. After splitting the first two games, Goshen rallied to win the final two games for the victory. Maddy Miller had a big night, leading the Lady Falcons with 12 digs, 11 assists and five aces. Ariana Schwartz had five kills and four aces, and Eva Herbert added six kills.
The JV fell 2-1, losing game three 15-8. Savannah Buss led the visitors with six kills and Jenna Fought chipped in eight assists and six digs.
Fairfield couldn’t get the points it needed in a tight 3-0 loss at Lakeland Thursday night. Kylie Beachy had a good defensive night with 12 digs while Schwartz put away six kills. The JV beat Lakeland 2-0, led by six Aubrey Ross kills.
A game three rally win for Fairfield was a little late in an eventual 3-1 loss at Fort Wayne Concordia on Saturday. Miller had 14 assists, seven digs and two aces, while Schwartz, Lacy Stoltzfus and Paige Park all had six kills. Schwartz, Stoltzfus and Herbert combined for 16 blocks in the matchup.
Ross had seven digs and four kills, but the JV fell to Concordia 2-0. The C Team picked up a 2-0 win over the Cadets.
Fairfield’s Jekyll and Hyde football season continued Friday night, losing 31-0 at West Noble. Fairfield has averaged 52 points in its two wins, but has been shut out in its three losses. Fairfield managed just 140 total yards against the Chargers, holding Breckan Maran to just 44 yards after Maran ran wild for over 250 yards against Culver Academy a week ago. Brooks Custer had 67 all-purpose yards.
Hunter Kauffman led the Falcon defense with 10 tackles.
