Matters came down a fifth-man score Monday at McCormick Creek, and NorthWood had the better boys golf round by four strokes to claim honors in the dual against Fairfield. NorthWood won the fifth score 45-49, breaking the 154 tie the two teams had through four golfers. Brayden Miller led the Falcons with a two-under 34 and Miles Nine carded 38.
Fairfield’s JV nearly were in the same predicament, but edged out NorthWood 184-185. Jayce Smith led Fairfield with a 44.
Fairfield and Northridge met for the second time in four days, this time in a dual circuit, and the Raiders bested the Falcons, 162-170, with both teams bettering Bethany’s 209 as the third leg of the trio at Meadow Valley.
Miller was the match medalist with a 36.
Ridge bettered Fairfield by 21 strokes in the JV card despite a personal-best 41 from Ben Kio.
Thursday had Fairfield pick up an NECC win, posting 159 to best Churubusco’s 216. Miller was again the medalist with a quick round of 34, and had Carl at 41 and both Nine and Elliott chipping in 42s.
In the JV run, Kio lowered his personal best to 40 as the Falcons beat Busco 185-252.
Fairfield finished runner-up to Northridge at Saturday’s Manchester Invite at Sycamore. The Falcons put together a 327, but Ridge rang up a 313 to claim honors. Miller once again led the field with a medalist 68.
Nine (81), Carl (87) and Kio (91) rounded out the scorers for the Falcons.
The Fairfield JV shot 379 as a unit at Saturday’s Plymouth Invite. Smith led the crew with an 89 and Lincoln Wogoman posted 95.
Doubles play helped Fairfield escape Northridge, 3-2, Monday afternoon in girls tennis. Elise Schwartz and Amanda McGuire held on to break Ridge in both sets of a 7-5, 7-6 win at one doubles while Eva Herbert and Lacy Stoltzfus rallied from a 6-1 first set loss to post matching 6-1 wins to take two doubles.
Addie Mast won the one singles court, beating Saige Wheatley 6-2, 6-1.
The Lady Falcons picked up a Northeast Corner Conference win Tuesday, a 5-0 straight set shutout of West Noble. Highlights included a one and one win from Herbert and Stoltzfus and a shutout win from Mast at one singles.
Fairfield took command of the JV matches at Northridge, going 8-3 over the grid, and a day later at West Noble, won all 10 of the contests.
Fairfield couldn’t find any magic Thursday at Warsaw, losing 5-0. The No. 1 singles match featured two hopeful state candidates in Mast and Addie Lind, the Tiger stud getting the best of the matchup 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Fairfield took seven of the nine JV matches at Warsaw.
Another win Tuesday in Northeast Corner Conference play for the Fairfield baseball squad, overwhelming Garrett 13-3. Fairfield grabbed a 9-0 lead before the Railroaders were able to respond, led by Michael Slabaugh’s three hits, three runs scored and two driven in. Landon Miller drove in two and stole three bases, and Owen Garrison allowed just three hits and struck out six in the complete game win on the bump.
Thursday was a pitcher’s dual at Fairfield, with Landon Miller holding Lakeland to five hits and two walks in a 1-0 Falcon victory. Miller struck out 12, including the side in the seventh to notch his first shutout of the season.
Eli Miller drove in the game’s only run, a solid single to drive in Slabaugh in the first inning.
New Prairie broke up a 3-3 tie with a nine-run spurt over the next three innings to top Fairfield, 12-6, Friday afternoon. Cohen Yoder had a three-run homer in the road contest.
Concord drew seven walks and had four stolen bases in a 4-2 win at Fairfield Saturday morning. Slabaugh had a triple and scored as part of the Fairfield offense.
The JV Falcons scored 15 runs in the first to blow past Garrett 20-1. Fairfield racked up six doubles, five stolen bases and had Garrett Stoltzfus and Grady Garber combine for five hits, five runs and six RBIs. Garber got the win on the hill, allowing just one hit and fanning four.
Fairfield continued to score JV runs in bunches, hanging 10 on Lakeland in a 10-2 win. Drew Beachy allowed just three hits and struck out seven for the pitching win, and added two hits, two runs and a stolen base at the plate. Grady Chupp and Austin Matthews both had two hits and two RBIs for the Falcons.
New Prairie broke open a 5-5 tie with five unanswered runs to beat the Falcon JV 10-5. Matthew Senn had a pair of RBIs in the loss.
The JV blew a two-run lead in the seventh and then gave up a run in the eighth to lose to Mishawaka, 5-4, on Saturday. Breckin Stair and Harley Garl each had two hits and an RBI to pace the Falcons.
Softball pounded the ball Tuesday against Garrett, using a three-run homer from Madison Jones and two ringing RBI doubles from Adelyn Holsopple and Breah Gill in a 13-3 win. Jones scored four runs in the contest and Berkey helped her cause with three runs scored, also striking out seven in the circle for the complete-game pitching win.
Fairfield continued to swing hot bats in the NECC, using three more homers from Jones and another from Holsopple in a 9-2 win over Lakeland Thursday afternoon. Gill added a double and two runs scored and Berkey scattered eight hits and four strikeouts in the pitching win.
Lakeland hung an eight-spot in the first inning of a 13-1 in the JV softball contest. Savannah Buss was 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Lady Falcons.
Track hit the road Tuesday for a visit to Prairie Heights, and came away with two victories. The boys team won 96-35 while the girls also pulled an 80-52 triumph.
Marco Garcia and Evan Correll each had a double win, Garcia in the 100 (11.2) and long jump (18-7.25) and Correll in the mile (5:02) and two-mile (10:40). Fairfield also swept the throws, Nick Hofer in shot (51-1.5) and Ethan Hochstetler in discus (138-5.5). The Falcons won 13 of the 16 events overall.
Emma Walter took both speed events to lead the girls, winning 100 (12.85) and 200 (27.38) honors. Madelyn Culp also doubled, taking the 100 hurdles (16.84) and the long jump (14-10). The Lady Falcons were winners in 10 of the 16 events.
Thursday at Lakeland, Hofer won both shot put (51-10) and discus (149-3) while Marco Garcia took both long jump (18-3.25) and the 100 dash (11.83) to pace Fairfield to a 91-41 NECC victory. The girls also won, 86-46, led by a triple dip from Natalee Lambright, who won the mile (5:55.44), two-mile (13:08.95) and the half mile (2:39.21). Culp also claimed a trio of wins in the 100 hurdles (16.92), 300 hurdles (52.18) and long jump (15-0).
The boys finished first and the girls third in Class B at Saturday’s Goshen Relays. Fairfield scored 80 points to stay ahead of LaVille’s 73 atop the boys standings while the girls finished with 96 points, chasing runner-up Angola and champion Hanover Central’s 110 points.
Hofer was a champion in shot put, sending the pill 49-0 feet on his best effort of the day. Hochstetler was second in discus (144-11) and the 4x800 relay team was second (9:03.33).
Fairfield had three girls champions and an award winner. The 4x800 relay team of Lambright, Elli Yoder, Katie Kuhn and Lyla Dennis were tops (11:00.54), Walter won the 100 dash (13.40) and Jalyn Stofleth and Shelby Miller were one-two in pole vault, Stofleth establishing 9-0 first. Claire Foust was second in high jump and Madelyn Culp was the High Point Award winner for Girls Class B.
The Fairfield junior high track program took on Lakeland Tuesday, the boys winning 74-44 and the girls falling 70-48.
John Ramer highlighted the boys win with three individual firsts, taking long jump (15-7), the 100 (12.64) and 200 (25.48). Fairfield also had field winners from Brandt Sark, Dylan Titterington, Gavin Lash and Casen Custer, as well as track wins from Bentley Smythe and Oakley Stichter.
The girls had a double win from Layna Stoltzfus in the 800 (3:03.32) and the 1600 (6:26.93), and added wins from Skylie Stichter in the 400 and Emery Holsopple in pole vault.
Friday night, Fairfield hosted Westview for a double dual. The boys side were able to squeak out a 67-51 win while the Lady Warriors trumped the hosts, 72-46.
Caden Harris and Ramer each doubled up wins for the boys, Harris in the half-mile (2:26.30) and the mile (5:22.10) while Ramer pulled out wins in the 200 (25.85) and the long jump (16-11.25). Stichter, Sark, Titterington and Lash all had wins for the boys.
Stoltzfus claimed high jump (4-2) and Nora Thieszen took the 200 (29.42) as part of the girls wins. Julianna Hinkle, Amy Bechtel and Emery Holsopple were among the Fairfield girls winners.
One football note, Caleb Borkholder was a $1,500 scholarship winner via the Moose Krause organization. Borkholder, a senior at Fairfield, was among a handful of area football players up for the scholarships, which are given to exemplary student athletes who excel in the classroom, on the football and in the community. Borkholder was one of four to receive the specific scholarship, given in increments of $2,000, $1,500 and two $1,000 awards. The Moose Krause scholarships have been awarded for 50 years, dating back to 1974 in honor of the late Moose Krause, a local football ambassador who served as athletic director at Notre Dame among many local football positions.
