The winter sports season officially kicked off last Tuesday when the defending Class 3-A state champion Fairfield girls basketball team visited Jimtown in the first contest of the year.
Despite falling behind by 10 after a quarter and still trailing at the half, Fairfield outscored Jimtown by 10 in the second half to claim a gritty 46-43 victory.
Eva Herbert paced the Falcons with 13 points, four boards and a pair of assists. Madison Jones had 12 rebounds to go with eight points and four assists. Kaylee Dillon added nine points and Natalie Whitaker hit a pair of second-half threes to chip in eight points. The victory gives new head coach Kyle Hartman his first career varsity win.
The JV won its game at Jimtown, 32-21.
Fairfield moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 56-25 win Saturday afternoon at Northfield. A 20-2 fourth quarter pulled Fairfield away after Northfield had chipped away at the lead with a solid third quarter. The Lady Falcons hit six three-pointers in the game and were 8-11 from the free throw line. Herbert again led Fairfield with 14 points and added six boards and four assists. Macy Worthman contributed 12 points and six boards, and Dillon finished with 11 points and seven steals.
