There was no Homecoming spoiler by Angola as Fairfield took care of business on its big night with a 28-12 football win.
The Falcon defense was solid, recording six sacks and 11 total tackles for a loss. Hunter Kauffman had 13 total tackles, Ethan Hochstetler had 11 tackles and three sacks, Caleb Borkholder had two sacks, Ethan Schmucker had a sack and Homecoming King Sawyer Ernsberger had eight tackles and two for a loss.
Blake Metzger had three total touchdowns, two on the ground and one through the air. Brooks Custer had 116 yards passing and two touchdowns as Fairfield moved to 4-2 overall and picked up its first win in the Northeast Corner Conference.
Golf season ended Friday afternoon for the Lady Falcons as its final two individuals were eliminated at the IHSAA East Noble Regional.
Addie Mast finished her final high school match with a 79, carding two birdies among her last 18 in the Wings. Mast was four strokes off the final state qualifier, a 75 from Culver Academy’s Karilyn Teglia. Mallory McGowen also competed at the regional, but was far off the pace with a 96 to wrap her season.
Fairfield jumped into dual cross country mode Monday and raced against Bethany Christian. The girls had no trouble landing all seven of its varsity ahead of the Lady Bruins in a 15-50 sweep. Katie Kuhn (24:01), Natalee Lambright (24:07) and Lyla Dennis (24:18) were the usual top three for the Lady Falcons, but Lorelei Shively crept up with a 24:36 for fourth overall.
Lambright led Fairfield with a 21:03, with Kuhn (21:13) and Dennis (21:17) among the top 25 in the Open Class race at Saturday’s Culver Academy Invite. The three helped Fairfield to a fourth-place finish among the field. The boys had Evan Correll finish 25th overall at 17:50. Ethan Garcia Mendoza (18:17) and Luke Mast (18:21) were among the top 60 in the Culver field.
Tennis finished its regular season 17-2 overall after clearing its final hurdle, 5-0, Monday against Bethany. All five courts won in straights, the two dubs team of Grady Garber and Drew Beachy won love and two while Noah Mast and Brant Garber won one and one, as did Cooper LeCount at two singles.
The JV ran its mark to 14-3 overall with a 9-3 win over the Bruins.
The momentum of an undefeated NECC season carried over to the conference tournament, where Fairfield won four of the five court brackets and won the team title. All of the singles titles went to the Falcons, Garrett Stoltzfus remaining undefeated on the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Fremont’s Colton Guthrie in the final. Cooper LeCount wrapped up the two singles title with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Kaden Hostetler of Westview, and Chase Buckholz rallied for a 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 cap of Haven Stockcamp of Angola.
Graber and Beachy also had to go three, rallying to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 against Angola’s Caleb Biemat and Jed Mortoff. The only blemish was at one doubles where Westview’s Gavin Engle and Kaden Grau took out Mast and Garber, 6-2, 7-5, in the final.
All seven of the Falcons were named All-NECC after the tournament.
Visiting New Prairie played well in stifling Fairfield in a 3-0 volleyball win Monday evening. Madison Jones led the Fairfield offense with seven kills while Amanda McGuire provided 15 digs and two aces. McKenna Fisher had eight digs and Maddy Miller assisted on 15 points. The Fairfield JV knocked off the Cougars in a 2-0 result. Gisel Lopez had three kills and two blocks, Neila Rumfelt and Abby Graber combined for 13 assists, and Kylie Beachy had 10 digs in the win.
Tuesday saw the varsity lose to Northridge 3-0, the JV lose 2-0 but the C team win 2-1. Eva Herbert and Alice Morrison each had five kills in the varsity contest and Lacy Stoltzfus had five kills and three aces in the JV matchup.
Fairfield got back on track Thursday, winning at all three levels against West Noble. In the Pink Out games, the C team won 2-0, JV won 2-0 and varsity won 3-1. Addy Piasecki led the JV with eight kills while Herbert and Fisher each had 14 putaways for the varsity. Fisher added five aces and 11 digs, and McGuire had 15 digs in the win.
Wrapping up the weekend, Fairfield went 2-2 at the Warsaw Invite. The Lady Falcons scored a pair of 2-1 wins over West Noble and Tippecanoe Valley, and took two 2-0 losses to Angola and Plymouth.
Offensive leaders for the tournament included Herbert with 18 kills, Morrison with 14 kills, Miller with 39 assists and both McGuire and Graber with seven aces apiece. McGuire and Ani Schwartz combined for 63 digs and Herbert added six blocks.
